Description
This work is actual macro photography with very minimal enhancement. All of my abstracts can be displayed vertically or horizontally. I simply present them here as they first struck me when I shot the original image. I was first struck by how the pattern of weathered paint and rust in this piece reminded me of a resting lion. That of course led my mind to the memories of a favorite song. The song known as "Wimoweh" (and later as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight") was written by Zulu singer and entertainer Solomon Linda, who recorded it with his vocal group, the Evening Birds, in a studio in South Africa in 1939. Linda titled the song "Mbube," which is Zulu for "The Lion." The lyrics translate something like "Lion! Ha! You're a lion?" and grew out of an incident in the groups' boyhood when they used to chase lions that were stalking their fathers' cattle.
Alan Lomax brought the song to the attention of Pete Seeger of the folk group The Weavers. It was on one of several records Lomax lent to Seeger. After performing the song for around a year during concerts, the Weavers recorded their version entitled "Wimoweh", a misheard version of the original song's chorus of 'uyimbube' (meaning "you're a lion").
