Description
As you leave Kansas entering Oklahomas stretch of the Mother Road, you will pass through the tiny community of Quapaw just three miles later. This small town of just less than 1,000 souls was named after the Quapaw Indians, who were originally from Arkansas. Surrounded by tall prairie grasses, the town was once an important hay-shipping area at the turn of the century. Later, cattle grazing and large ranches became essential to the economic industry of the community. However, the real boom of the town was the zinc and lead mining industry, which began in the region as early as 1897. The town boomed during the years of 1917 and 1918 and many of the Quapaw Indians received immense royalties.
In the 1920s U. S. Route 66 was developed through Quapaw and was paved through Ottawa County in Oklahoma by 1933. The town displays several nice murals on its buildings that deserve a stop for a photo opportunity.

What a great capture of days gone by with the old murals and nature making its way up and over the building!

I love the fact that someone took the time to paint those wonderful murals on the side of the building. You've capture it beautifully! L/F
Lee Craig replied:
The mainstreet is pretty much deserted and at the time that I was through there it was also hard to navigate. There are old murals on almost all of the buildings in downtown Quapaw, Jon...very cool!

What a great capture of this elderly downtown Main St. Your touch of HDR brings out the character of the old bricks and makes the signage pop!

Great find, Lee!! Love how they've continued the old time store fronts as murals!! Terrific back story!
