Artist's Description

This is a view into the Grand Canyon from a point on the South Rim in late April, nearing sunset as a spring storm approaches.

The road to the Grand Canyon from the south crosses a plateau that gives no hint at what you are about to see. You wonder if you have made a wrong turn. You wonder if somehow it has been moved! All at once an immense gorge a mile deep and up to 18 miles wide opens up. The canyon is so vast that even from the best vantage point only a fraction of the canyon's 277 miles can be seen. For thousands of years, the area has been continuously inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon ("Ongtupqa" in Hopi language) a holy site and made pilgrimages to it. It is contained within and managed by Grand Canyon National Park, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, and the Havasupai Tribe. Weather in the Grand Canyon varies according to elevation.
