Description
Cuervo, New Mexico…the kind of place you slam on the breaks for, make an illegal U turn, and stomp through rattle snake territory to get to. That is just what I did.
A quaint little ghost town, Cuervo is worth the side trip…although be aware that you may not be welcome. I was told that the handful of property owners do not take too kindly to visitors, due to vandalism, and I can certainly understand that.
Cuervo was a railroad town, brought to life about 1902 when the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad came through and turned the little outpost into a water stop. An expansion of cattle and sheep ranching swept through the area in 1910. A couple decades later, Route 66 ran straight through town, easily supporting the few gas stations and hotels that sprang up in its wake. At its height, Cuervo had two of everything a person could want: schools, churches, doctors, and hotels. In the late 1960’s, I-40 was put right through the center of town. The construction of the interstate system was a death knell.
As I was shooting this series, an older gentleman walked by on the dusty trail. He mentioned that the rattlesnakes were moving today. Guess I was lucky!

I am a photographer and visual artist, enjoying the freedom that comes with doing something that I love for a living. Several times a year I leave the studio behind, load the equipment and head out on the open roadcamera in hand and photos in mind. Please enjoy browsing my various galleries of photography and digital art. If you happen to find something that calls to you, then I will have achieved success.
